Earlier this week I discovered that video from the Lambic summit that John and I attended last June during Philly beer week was posted by the Sheldon Brothers. This was a great event and a great finish to an awesome day in Philly.

Since I didn’t really post anything on philly beer week and the summit last year, I will share with you an interesting experience. The summit was running late and I had to pee, so I went to the rest room quickly before it started. On my way there there were 3 guys in front of me walking down the same hall chatting about stuff. I recall thinking I recognized one of them when he asked one of the other taller gentleman what was taking so long and when will the event start. I realized soon after that the guy complaining was Greg Koch of Stone and said something like “now I know where I know you from, hows it going.” He must not of heard me cause he walked off without a flinch. I was walking behind him, but it was a little strange that he waked off cause I thought I said it loudly. The other gentleman went into the bathroom ahead of me. We chatting a bit in the bathroom and I quickly discovered that this was Dan Sheldon (one of the Sheldon brothers) and the moderator of the event (he is in all the videos). We had a nice chat and I thanked him for doing the event. He was a very nice guy. We left and the event started shortly afterwards. When the event was over I was able to shake the hand of all the speakers. Many of the attendees were getting signatures. I tried  to encourage Armand to continue to make beer with some polite praise of his beers, but he just smiled and moved on. They were all very nice guys.

This years Belgian fest was better than ever due to the additional company and excellent beers. It was some what difficult getting there because the event was held in the aftermath of the two huge winter storms of Feb 2010, but we eventually made it.

The adventure started with us taking the bus from Owings Mills because the trains were not running at the above ground stations. I don’t really have many positive things to say about this form of transit. It was slow and we took a couple of strange detours. We eventually made it to the transfer point to the underground rail, but once moving they were also going really slow for some reason. By the time we made it out of shot tower we had lost a lot of time and only had a little over an hour to eat and get to maxes.

Left with little options, we grabbed some delicious pre-made McDonalds breakfast sandwiches and made the walk to Maxes. We made a quick stop into our usual breakfast stop (Blue Moon) to say hi to Scott, but the wait staff were confused with our entry and quick exit. We turned the corner to Maxes to find a handful (maybe 15) already waiting. We quickly brushed off our transit imposed lateness and squeezed into line at the opening point of the door, this is where experience pays off. The event opened on time and we quickly grabbed our usual table, sure to put two together for the added guests. The tables were bar tables instead of the usual ones, but that worked out fine.

John, Scott, and I started off as usual with samples but when my cousin and her husband arrived they started ordering all kinds of things, thus many things were tasted. I’m going to do my best to reproduce both lists and highlight the ones from mine that were good. Here is my list first:

This years belgian fest dates (Feb 12-14) have been set for some time now, but the beer list has yet to appear anywhere. Thus, I wrote to Casey at Max’s to get the current list so that I can begin preparing for this years trip. He provided me with an early version of the draft and bottle list.

I annotated the beers to indicate which ones I had at previous fests and elsewhere. Interestingly, of the 54 beers I have tried during the 3 belgian fests I attended, only 15 are back on the list. Missing seems to be some of the US belgians, but I’m thinking these may appear last minute.

Another great Belgian fest has come to a close and it was a great one. This time John, Scott, and Kevin came. It made for great fun.

Here’s the play by play: Left the house very early because our latest possible ride was 7:00 am. John and I were dropped off at the Owings Mills train station and took that to shot tower. Walked from shot tower to the blue moon where we met Scott. Had a hearty breakfast and met Steve S. at Max’s around 9:30 am.

We were the first ones waiting and people collected over the 1.5 hr wait. More than I have ever seen on the first day. For some reason the guy opening the place pulled someone in front of us even though we were waiting first. We had the reverse issue in previous years and never got the same treatment.

Anyways, we were seated by 11:05 am. John, Scott, and I at one table (Kevin came later) and Steve and his co-workers at another. The place was crowded right off the bad and it was hard getting drinks, but we did ok.

Kevin arrived several hours into drinking. John was always at least 3-4 drinks behind Scott and I. Scott was trying his best to handle the sour lambics but eventually succumbed. They were pretty good lambics. We got an experimental Hanssens lambic (cassis), made with blackberries. Kevin stuck with the Cantillon, which is probably for the best. We finished around 4-5 with Scott leaving first, John after Leslie had a brew, and lastly me and Kevin with a slice from next door on the way out.

Overall I documented 20 unique drinks, but I know I drank more because John, Scott, and Kevin were feeding me beers they didn’t want. I guess I was the days beer dumpster. Here is the line-up:

In light of the up and coming Belgian fest at max’s, I thought it would be fun to revisit our 2007 and 2008 fest experience.

2007

Highlights: This was our first Belgian fest. Walked from shot tower to Maxes early in the morning on a thick sheet of ice. Return walk was much easier. We started with a pint of cuvee and quickly moved to sample glasses in order to get more drinks in. The place was very smoky then but we still enjoyed it. Also there was Dooge, Lesbians, Firefighters, and ice. Need I say more?

Looks like the dates were finally posted for this years Belgian fest at Max's. The dates are Feb 13th - 15th. There is a thread on beeradvocate, but it doesn't have more than that. Will post more later when I see it.
